Organic Cotton Production Guide

Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) grown organically fetches a 20–30% price premium in global textile markets. Organic certification under GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) or India's NPOP is increasingly demanded by European buyers.

Soil Health Foundation

Cotton is highly sensitive to soil compaction. Deep tillage (30–40 cm) followed by incorporation of 10 tonnes FYM per hectare 3–4 weeks before sowing improves water infiltration and aeration critical for boll development.

Seed Treatment Protocol

1. Soak seeds in water for 12 hours to improve germination uniformity
2. Treat with Trichoderma viride (4 g/kg) for wilt control
3. Apply Rhizobium + Azospirillum slurry (25 g + 25 g per kg seed)
4. Allow to shade-dry for 1 hour before sowing

Integrated Pest Management (IPM)

Organic cotton IPM is critical to commercial success:

• Bollworm: Install 5 pheromone traps per acre; spray Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) at 1 kg/ha at first instar larval stage
• Aphids & Whiteflies: Spray neem oil (5 mL/L) + garlic extract weekly during infestation
• Thrips: Blue sticky traps at 10/acre; Verticillium lecanii spray at 2 g/L

Boll Development & Maturation

Apply Calcium + Boron foliar spray (0.4% CaN + 0.2% Borax) at boll initiation to prevent internal boll rot and improve fiber length. Potassium silicate at maturation strengthens the bolls against premature opening.
