Organic Sugarcane Cultivation

Sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum) is a long-duration crop (12–18 months) that requires sustained nutrition throughout its growth cycle. Organic cultivation improves soil health, reduces input costs in later ratoon crops, and commands premium prices from organic sugar mills.

Planting Material & Sett Treatment

Select disease-free seed cane from 8–10 month old crop. Treat setts with Trichoderma + Azotobacter slurry (5 g + 10 g per L) for 30 minutes before planting to prevent red rot and promote early root growth.

Planting Method

Use trench planting at 90 cm row spacing with flat-bottom furrows 20–25 cm deep. Apply 10 tonnes FYM or 5 tonnes vermicompost per hectare in trenches before placing setts. Cover with 5 cm soil.

Ratoon Management

Sugarcane ratoons benefit enormously from organic inputs as soil biology improves with each cycle:

• Apply Azospirillum + PSB as bio-fertilizer at ratoon establishment
• Use pressmud compost (a byproduct of sugar mills) at 5 tonnes/ha — it is rich in phosphorus and micronutrients
• Trash mulching (retaining dry leaves) conserves soil moisture and adds 40–60 kg N/ha as it decomposes

Juice Quality Enhancement

Apply Potassium Sulfate (SOP) at 100 kg/ha at 8–9 months to improve sucrose content and Brix values. Avoid chloride-based fertilizers which dilute juice quality.
