Growing Guide
High-Yield Organic Tomato Production
Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) is among the highest-value horticultural crops globally. With intensive organic management, yields of 80–120 tonnes/ha are achievable while producing premium export-quality fruits.
Nursery Preparation
Use a sterilized cocopeat + vermicompost (3:1) mix in pro-trays. Drench with Trichoderma harzianum at 2 g/L before sowing to prevent damping-off. Maintain 25–30°C for optimal germination within 5–7 days.
Field Preparation
Form raised beds of 90–100 cm width. Apply 25–30 tonnes FYM/ha as basal dose, incorporated 3 weeks before transplanting. Install drip irrigation with 30 cm lateral spacing and lay reflective mulch to suppress weeds and reduce viral disease incidence.
Critical Growth Stages
- Transplanting to First Flower: Focus on root development — apply mycorrhizal inoculant at transplanting
- Flowering: Boron (0.2%) + Calcium (0.3%) foliar sprays every 10 days prevent blossom end rot
- Fruit Set: Potassium-rich inputs (SOP) to improve fruit size, color, and shelf life
- Fruit Maturation: Reduce nitrogen, increase calcium and potassium to enhance lycopene content
Staking & Pruning
For indeterminate varieties, use single-stem pruning on wire trellises. Remove suckers weekly to direct photosynthate towards fruit development. Proper staking increases air circulation and reduces disease pressure by 40%.
